Experiences of personalised medicine
Understanding the experiences of those affected by, or involved in, the process and outcomes of personalised medicine.
The term ‘personalised medicine’ can take on different meanings in different contexts. Our approach involves collaborating with a diverse range of people to understand what personalised medicine means to them, and how it has impacted them and/or their family. We draw on research that highlights the complexity of patient journeys through genomics, and work with participants to develop resources that demonstrate this. This highlights the various routes people take and the support systems, and the wider context of their lives that they rely on to manage this process. We also consider the impact on practitioners who need to inform and explain possible testing and outcomes to patients and families and consider their views on implementation, communication and training needs.
Our aim is to help prepare individuals, families and practitioners for the challenges that may lie ahead, and to inform policy makers and healthcare providers about what matters most to patients and their families. The CPM is exploring experiences of personalised medicine through the lens of the CPM’s three pillar themes: 1) diagnosis and treatment, 2) risk and prevention, and 3) evolving health system boundaries.
