Songs of Genomics highlights
What is it like to be a patient undergoing genomic medicine? On 2nd November 2024 researchers from the Centre for Personalised Medicine (CPM) and Centre for Human Genetics (CHG), both part of the University of Oxford, and HIVE Choir from Belfast presented an evening of cutting-edge contemporary songs inspired by leading research into the experiences of patients undergoing genomic testing to help diagnose rare diseases or cancer. This innovative and exciting collaboration marked the second time HIVE Choir, a leading experimental vocal ensemble, had partnered with researchers from the University of Oxford to explore experiences of genomic medicine. The choir composed a series of songs based on the latest research, to communicate and explore the complexities and realities of patients’ experiences with genomic testing. The evening concert was an English premier of the Songs of Genomics, also featuring a new piece co-created during a workshop earlier in the day with individuals affected by genomic testing drawn from across the UK. The musical performance was followed by an engaging panel discussion with a range of experts from across the field.
