PechaKucha Session
Graduate students and early career researchers from all disciplines who are interested in health and medicine are welcome to apply for the PechaKucha session – we would love to hear about your research and how it relates to personalised medicine. The audience choice winner will receive a certificate and a £100 Blackwell’s voucher.
Do you have an idea, interest or research project you would like to talk about? Our popular PechaKucka is a really enjoyable and supportive environment to try something new. This is what Will Cooke (2024 winner) said:
“I’d not even heard of PechaKucha before I saw the invitation to the CPM Research Showcase. It sounded fun and a bit different from most research presentations, so I thought I’d give it a go. It was surprisingly challenging to create such a succinct talk. However, it made for an engaging set of presentations to listen to and I found the whole day really enjoyable.”
Similar to a lightning talk, a PechaKucha is an opportunity to strengthen your presenting skills. What makes it a bit different is that it relies on using compelling image-based slides. There are also some timing rules that everyone must follow. You would prepare exactly 20 slides and have exactly 20 seconds to present each slide (so just under 7 minutes in total). See the end of this email for helpful links on how to prepare a PechaKucha talk.
Please register your interest in participating in the PechaKucha by emailing cpm@well.ox.ac.uk with your suggested title and a brief summary of the topic you would like to talk about (max. one paragraph) by no later than Friday 1st May 2026. We will aim to inform you whether you have been selected by Thursday 7th May. Invited participants are required to provide their PowerPoint to cpm@well.ox.ac.uk by Friday 22nd May, although you will be able to make small changes after this date.
Further instructions on PechaKucha
PechaKucha is a fun and creative short-form, image-driven, timed presentation. The aim is to provide a summary of your chosen topic using compelling images in exactly 20 slides, with each slide timed to automatically advance every 20 seconds. Your talk on the day must keep up with this timing and we ask that you set up auto-timing for slide transition. Keeping to the time will challenge you to share your ideas concisely!
The focus of each slide needs to be an intriguing image that supports your talk. What compelling images could you use to convey your research? Photographs, drawings, cartoons, graphics are all commonly used. You can be creative with this. You can use visualisations of data (i.e., charts, diagrams, etc.), but remember you will only have 20 seconds to explain each slide. Please do consider copyright for image usage.
Using text on slides is very much discouraged, unless it is integral to the image(s).
